How to Play Pallanguzhi

1. Set up the board
Two players sit facing each other.
Each player uses the 7 little cups (pits) on their side of the board.
Put the same number of seeds in every cup – start with 4 or 6 seeds in each.

2. Your turn
Choose any one of your cups.
Pick up all the seeds from that cup.
Drop one seed into each cup as you move around the board, along your row and then along your opponent’s row.

3. Keep going
If your last seed lands in a cup that already has seeds, pick up all the seeds from that cup and keep sowing.
Your turn only stops when your last seed lands in an empty cup.

4. Win extra seeds (capturing)
If your last seed lands in an empty cup on your side, look at the cup directly opposite it.
If that opposite cup has seeds, you win them! Put them in a pile beside you – that’s your score.

5. End of the round
Players take turns until one player has no seeds left in any of their cups.
The other player takes all the seeds left on their own side.
Both players count their seeds. The player with the most seeds wins the round.

6. Play again
Refill the cups using the seeds you won.
Play as many rounds as you like and see who becomes the Pallanguzhi champion!
